My Paintings
What began with an interest in the atmosphere of Edwardian style cafes and restaurants in Cheltenham in the 1950's, led to paintings of ocean liners, railway carriages, conservatories, topiary gardens and many other subjects. The paintings are usually quite large, often in the form of Triptychs which can be free standing. This form seems to help the viewer to feel drawn into the picture. There is usually a strong perspective element which boosts this effect. While I make use of photography in the paintings, they are rarely literal interpretations of real places. I try to make the images as realistic as possible, using photographs to assemble the compositions. Figures populate them in an almost theatrical manner to create balance tension and drama.
